In the late 1980s, the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) wastewater treatment process was invented. The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) system consists of an aeration tank (similar to an activated sludge tank) with plastic transporters filled with wastewater is used in the MBBR process. This promotes the growth of biofilm. These carriers and water have the same density of 1 g/cm3, which is close to that of water. Usually, activated sludge systems require sludge recycling, but this is not the case with the MBBR process. It is considered to be a better option than other traditional methods. The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technique enables the bacteria to create a biofilm, unlike the Activated Sludge Process. The MBBR technology is used in anaerobic digesters and semicontinuous activated sludge processes as well.
